Texas Chocolate Sheet Cake

Welcome to the April Pinterest Challenge Blog Hop. The purpose of this Pinterest Challenge is to motivate all the participants of this hop (and you too) to not just pin, but to make it happen! This month, I chose to make a Texas Chocolate Sheet Cake. My inspiration came from this pin from Dessert For Two.

Texas Chocolate Sheet Cake
This recipe is actually for a quarter sheet cake which can be made in a 13″ x 9″ pan. I made this for my family’s birthday get together in March. Since there are only 6 people eating, this is perfect size! And I couldn’t remember who liked nuts and who didn’t so I only put pecans on half the cake. Everyone said this cake is really good so it looks like it’s a keeper!
Cake Ingredients:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 1 stick (4 ounces) unsalted butter
- 2 heaping tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup boiling water
- 1/4 cup buttermilk
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
Frosting Ingredients:
- 7 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 heaping tablespoons cocoa powder
- 3 tablespoons buttermilk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 2 heaping cups powdered sugar
Some people say it’s called a Texas sheet cake because the original recipe makes such a large cake. I believe what makes it a Texas sheet cake is how rich it is! I’m not really sure but you definitely have to make that icing – it really sets it apart from a regular chocolate cake!

Now, let’s see what the other hosts have created ⇓⇓
Thanks for sharing this recipe with us. I printed it out to make for our Easter gathering. It looks very yummy.
I haven’t had a Texas sheet cake in years! Looks like a good recipe! Thanks for sharing.
I too have seen this recipe and have likely saved it. Now I want some. Chocolate cake with that yummy fudge icing is my favorite! Looks like you nailed it too.

This looks amazing! I love chocolate cake. I’ve always looked at the Texas Sheet Cake Recipes, but haven’t tried one yet.
Looks great and simple enough! Thanks for sharing!
This looks delicious. I love how thoughtful you were to only put the nuts on half. As a non nut eater myself I think that’s so lovely.
Looks delicious! I will have to try out your recipe!

This sounds delicious! I am not usually a chocolate cake fan, but I’m going to have to try this one!
I love that you added nuts to only half.. I am definitely a no nuts person when it comes to my sugary sweet treats. This looks yummy. Pinned.
Texas Sheetcake is my husband’s favorite cake. Texas Sheetcake cookies are good too. I made them for Christmas and posted about them. They’re made from cake mix and literally take 10 minutes to make.
Chocolate and pecans! Yummy! I love a good chocolate cake!
Good-ness, this Texas chocolate cake looks so good. I can almost taste it here in El Paso. I think what I like best…without the privilege of tasting it is how moist it looks. Almost like a chewy brownie. I am afraid to pin the recipe, afraid I will make it and eat it until I can’t get in my jeans any more. But, throwing all caution to the wind, and praying for a little self control, I am pinning anyway.
Yum!!! This looks incredible! Wish I could jump into the picture and grab a slice.
